Share Your Perks
While discussing my cancer perks with a Radiation technician last week, he said, “I know exactly what you mean. My friend completely lost his sense of taste while undergoing chemotherapy. It was the first time he could tolerate his wife’s cooking.” And so the idea was born: Sharing other people’s perks! Beginning in May, 2012, I will be posting YOUR perks of having cancer. Just email your perk to:

My father had awesome wavy hair… I have been jealous of it my entire life. No longer: post-chemo hair regrowth is delightfully wavy. Curly, even, in the back. I know it won’t last, but hey!

I am so happy to find this blog. When I speak of feeling blessed to have been diagnosed with breast cancer, I usually get all kinds of different looks of not understanding how it could be so. Of course this realization came with hindsight. Testing became an everyday word in my vocabulary; from pre-diagnostic to pre-surgeries and I do mean surgeries. The end result: besides the 2 lumps in the right breast, I also had a child’s fist size lump displacing my esophagus (turned out to be benign but was growing fairly rapidly) and a kidney that was only working at about 18 percent. Both needed to be removed also. The lump near my esophagus would have continue to grow making breathing and eating more difficult. The kidney had a bacterial infection (only God knows how long it had been growing) that manifested in a kidney stone that continued to grow in the kidney without ever trying to pass. Today I am doing great without ever experiencing the difficulties that could have been very painful to say the least. OK, Perks #1 and #2.
Perk #3: I worked at an elementary school with 65 + people. My new family. Not only did they do so much fundraising for me; enough to cover all of my out-of-pocket expenses they became my prayer warriors. They were my strength. Everyone of them. Prayers, cards, rides, hugs, smiles, laughs and more prayers daily. Who could ask for more? I am so very Blessed!

Florence, My name is Lisa Hanson. I met your beautiful sister at a TRX certification in Sarasota. Through conversation, I shared my survivorship of breast cancer story with her. She gave me your web site info. Thanks so much for such wonderful insight! Hope your sis gets this note!
